Welcome to St Clement’s.
Jo and I have returned from holiday. Sadly all the benefits of the break seem to be fading fast. Why is that always the way? Anyway, it is good to be back.
Last week Andy started our new series entitled Return to God from the book of Hosea. Hosea was an 8th century BC prophet who was called by God not only to speak God’s word but also to act it out. In this case it required him to marry a woman who would be unfaithful to him. We will see what happens today.
Of course marriage is an important topic at the minute. In this regard I saw in the papers over the holidays an article proclaiming the advantages of a bromance, ie: a close friendship between men. The author wrote, ‘for many the bromance is the ideal relationship… all you get is confirmation, comfort and sameness. It’s like looking in the mirror’. So that’s the ideal! Isn’t marriage the ideal?
Marriage is not about sameness, it’s about difference. It’s about two different people a man and woman coming together, and marvellously, miraculously becoming one flesh under God.
Hosea tells us that God is married to us. He is not our equal. We are not the same and yet in Christ we can be one with him.
No marriage is easy, certainly not our marriage with God. Yet the great news you will hear today is not only does God keep his promises, in Jesus he keeps our promises as well.
